looking for Kalifront at the woods

In acient times lived Kalifront, a shephard looking after his father's sheep. Kalifront's father was a friend of Barbat, the lord of the eastern part of the island of Rab, who had a daughter Draga ( Darling). Kalifront fell madly in love with the girl but Draga was promised by her mother to Goddess Diana and thus refused him,  turned into a stone statue, while Kalifront spend the rest of his life  as a hermit, planting the forest and feeding on wild fruits. The wood was named after him.
Kalifront wood is one of the best preserved wood zones of oak trees on the whole Mediterranean, covering  an area of 1.400 ha, situated on the south-western side of the island of Rab. It is the greenest part of the island of Rab covered with extraordinary Holm oak forest and it is also the largest woodland area. In the same area, we could say a sub-section of it, there is a special reserve park Dundovo with its 109 ha of the best preserved oaks (Quercus ilex).
In 1949 the forest Dundo was declared a natural rarity and it was placed under the protection of the Department for Natural Heritage Protection in the category of "special reserve forest - botanical reserve" (forest vegetation). - Holm oak (Quercus ilex) is an evergreen oak which can reach thousand years of age.
The whole area has many paths suitable for long walks or mountin biking.
The characteristic of the peninsula of Kalifront is its carst relief and the well-indented coast with numerous beautiful sea bays, from Cifnata, Armata, Gozinka, to Kristofor...
Here we can also find old Premuzic road, named after Ante Premužić (1889-1979), the great builder of roads and trails, most known after his Velebit mountain trekk road of 57 km. He directed construction of 2 trekking roads on island Rab, which are unique on the Adriatic.
Premuzic path on Kalifront peninsula begins left from the source of Pidok and follows a mild slope to the entrance of the special reserve forest Dundo and ends in the Bay of Christopher. Wandering arround the area, one can often come across old lime pit holes or bauxite mine, so it seems that our dear hermit Kalifront was occupied not just with berry picking and hunting.. :-)
Other than this, one can enjoy 9km walk or ride from Kalifront cape to the cape of peninusla Frkanj, passing by a tuna watch and finally enjoying a stunning view on the old town of Rab from the very cape.
